This page offers nourishment for every layer of your being. We’ve all heard the saying: “You are what you eat.” But there’s more to it than that. You are what you digest, you are what you think, you are what you believe and you are the stories you keep telling yourself. I hope this page reminds you that you are worthy, and someone else thinks you are too. If you’re pregnant remind yourself that your baby deserves a well-nourished you too.
Rocket Fuel
Last week, while we were listening to the radio on the way to school the DJ asked how on earth to make a green smoothie. She said she put everything into her blender, including blackberries and it just didn’t turn out green. Sooo, first bit of advice when deciding to add green smoothies to your day: Don’t add berries ;-) We do green smoothies daily at Casa Murphy. I make one while I’m putting together school lunches, that way I can get something nourishing in quickly before the school run.
Note
All ingredient qualities are approximate. Get the hang of adding ingredients in amounts that feel right for you and nourishing yourself becomes intuitive. An art we have lost in the age of weights and measures.
ingredients
One ripe banana
A slice of pineapple
One handful of kale
One handful of rocket
One handful of parsley
A tsp of coconut oil (this is optional, but coconut oil ups the nutrient absorption and the addition of a healthy fat like this slows the sugar spike from the fruit)
Coconut water or filtered water
Blitz everything together in a high speed blender and boom!
on like a chelating agent in your gut, binding and sucking out vital minerals that your body should be absorbing!!
PREGNANT?
The thought of green smoothies might make you turn green during the first trimester, but once you’re over that hurdle they’re a great way to bump up your nutrient intake (they’re a great source of Vit K) and get your colours in while you’re growing your little person.
New Mother?
If you’re recovering from birth and are breastfeeding, smoothies are a boon. You can blitz them up with one hand and baby in the other when you’re feeling famished. Just avoid having them ice cold. In the weeks after birth you want to be comforting and warming up your system and restoring your digestive fire, so if you are having a smoothie, skip the ice and have it at room temperature. I will be sharing smoothies to boost lactation in the future, so watch this space.
Grounding Salad
While I was pregnant with my third, this was one of my favourite salads - a vibrant, earthy mix of root vegetables, beautiful seeds and oils that is nourishing on so many levels.
Ingredients
3 beetroots, peeled
4 large carrots, peeled
Pepitas, pumpkin seeds, or another seed of choice
Raisins for a little chewy sweetness (and a bit of an iron boost)
Fresh dill
Hemp or olive oil
Lemon or lime juice
Grate the beetroot and carrot, toss with your oil and citrus juice and top with the seeds and dill. So simple and beautiful on its own or as a side to your protein of choice.
A Recipe for "Whatever"
February 20, 2020
So I just asked my family what they want for dinner and the answer was a resounding “Whatever”. I realised that I can’t possibly be the only maitre D’… sorry, darn autocorrect… matriarch out there who has had this meal request come up. I was stumped for a while. I googled “whatever” and all it came up with was…
Anything and everything
Pinterest was no help at all. Which is surprising, really, because I you can usually fine ANYTHING there. Recipes for self-love, a recipe for a new year, recipes for success, recipes for a happy marriage, recipes for life, love, vegan steak… ANYTHING.
So I’ve written one. It really is a no-mess, no-fuss, pop-it-in-one-pot kind of recipe. Try it out and let me know what you think…
Serves: Well, anyone and everyone, whether they like it or not
Oven temp: 180C, that’s usually right, so let’s go with that
Ingredients
1 large “What is thaaaat?” peeled and diced
1 cup of “But I don’t feel like that”
3/4 cup of “I’m not hungry”
A dash of turmeric (it’s anti-inflammatory so feel free to add more than a dash, heck throw it in with gay abandon. It’ll also make everything nice and yellow rather than brown)
1/2 cup “But I don’t like green bits”
A handful of “Not that agaaain”
2 finely grated “yucks”
Season with a little “Tastes funny”
METHOD
Saute the “What is thaaaaat”, the “But I don’t feel like that” and the “I’m not hungry” in a little olive oil until caramelised. Add 500ml of worn-to-the-bone broth, bring to the boil and then leave to simmer for 20 minutes. Put your feet up… I dare you. Then add the “But I don’t like green bits”, the “Not that agaaaain”, the “finely grated yucks” and leave to simmer until everyone asks when dinner’s ready.
And voila!
Whatever!
